All gearboxes supplied by CSP are completely reconditioned and tested. Any old part that we receive is completely stripped down, thoroughly cleaned and checked carefully for defects and wear. The bearing end plate is fitted with new bushes for the selector rods. In addition the gearbox is fitted with new synchronising rings and settings are adjusted. We offer this gearbox both for road use and also purely for racing.
Design the gearbox that you want with the CSP gearbox calculator. All ratios that can be supplied can be called up here and assembled individually. The good news is that you can also order your design of gearbox directly at the same time.
Please bear in mind, however, that the engine must also be able to cope with the gearbox that you have designed. The rule of thumb here is that the heavier the vehicle or the lower the engine power rating the lower should be the gear ratios. Also the larger the cam shaft, the smaller the intervals in rpm between the gears.
Large engines with lots of torque don't mind larger intervals in rpm however, and for that reason we only recommend our motorway gearbox (in the gearbox calculator letter: d) for use with an engine capacity of 2.4 litres and upwards.
Gearboxes of this kind of build are found in Beetles and Karmann Ghias from 1961 and in all Type 3s. This model of gearbox can also be used for the VW Bus up to the 1967 build year. For the latter however we have to reverse the axle drive because of the reduction box. Also the Bus gearboxes are supplied without the nose cone. If your old nose cone can no longer be used, we offer under Order No. 301 205 211H the corresponding new part. If you want to order a gearbox for a VW Bus -67, please make sure that you make this clear when ordering!

This should enable you to identify the gearbox in your vehicle unambiguously. You will find the identification letters defined, together with the serial number, on the right-hand side of the gearbox in the direction of travel.

IRS or swing axle?
On the following pages you will have to know whether your vehicle is fitted with a swing axle or independent rear suspension. If you don't know the difference, or if you are not sure, the adjacent diagram can help you to decide which kind of rear axle suspension your vehicle has.
2 or 3 bolts fixing?
In addition to needing information as to whether you want to order a gearbox for a swing axle or independent rear suspension, we need some data concerning the configuration of the forward gearbox bearing. Here we have once again presented the possible fixings in a diagram. As can be seen, VW have used nose cones with either 2 or 3 bolt fixings. It is absolutely essential to provide this information when ordering since if there is a subsequent exchange of nose cone the guarantee on your gearbox becomes invalid! Please check therefore before ordering your gearbox as to which version you require.
The nose cone with 2 bolts and a long selector rod required for conversion of a Beetle 53-59 to a fully synchronised gearbox and Bus -67 can be ordered as an option.

Guided or unguided clutch release bearing?
In principle our gearboxes are fitted out to receive a guided clutch release bearing. This configuration was that basically used for gearboxes from 1971 onwards. We are of course happy to accommodate a request for an unguided clutch release bearing. Please tell us what you want when ordering.

There are many different gear ratios that can be supplied for a Type 1 gearbox. To calculate the exact ratio of a particular gear please proceed as described below or use the CSP gear calculator with which you can quickly and easily design an individualised gearbox that corresponds to your requirements, and can also order it directly.
